About Families in Transition
|
Families in Transition (FIT) is a non-profit agency that provides safe affordable transitional housing to homeless women
with or without children. Participants also receive comprehensive supportive services, including support groups,
workshops and computer & employment training.
More information about Families in Transition can be found at www.fitnh.org
On May 22, 2004, Families in Transition (FIT)
held its Volunteer Appreciation Brunch at their
Market Street location. Many people who
volunteered in the past year were invited to
attend this event, including eight MMBC
members.
FIT recognizes the important role that all their
volunteers play in keeping the day-to-day
operations of FIT running smoothly. At the
brunch, they took the opportunity to recognize
a number of groups and individuals, who really
went above and beyond expectations.
T The Manchester Monarchs Booster Club was
involved in FIT's Barnes & Noble gift wrapping,
Outfitter's workday for the employment
program, donation of the complete essential
basket and support through their newsletter. They are also scheduled to work a fundraiser at a New
Hampshire Fisher Cats game, that will raise funds for FIT.
FIT said via thank you note, "I would like to thank-you for attending the Families in Transition Volunteer
Appreciation Brunch. I hope you found the morning both fun and informative. It was truly a pleasure to see
volunteers that have helped support us in so many different ways".
MMBC member Karen Heaton said "Being an active member of MMBC has been a very rewarding experience.
Not only have I met other hockey fans and made new friends, I have also had the opportunity to volunteer my time and make a real difference in my new community.
Hockey players are known for their community efforts wherever they play. In Manchester, hockey fans are also developing a reputation for assisting others. We
met some of the current residents, heard how much our efforts helped to raise needed funds, the importance of providing materials for setting up new residents in
their apartments, and the huge impact we made cleaning up their warehouse. A brief tour of the main facilities concluded the morning event. It is nice to know our
individual contributions on behalf of MMBC have benefited members of our community who just need a helping hand so they can be self-sufficient. Hockey players
and hockey fans are very special people indeed"!

On Saturday, March 13, 2004, a group of Manchester Monarchs Booster Club members
came out to Outfitters, Families in Transition’s thrift store, to help sort, stack and move
donations.
The purpose of Outfitters is to serve as a community-based training site for the Employment
and Training Program, to provide permanent employment to FIT graduates, to defray the
costs of housing and services provided by FIT and to provide household items and clothing
to program participants through a voucher program. Outfitters is constantly in need of help
with their donations, due to the large volume donated each week, but this workday had a
very special purpose. By spending their day with us, this group of volunteers helped us get
one step closer to implementing the Employment and Training Program classes at their new
location in Outfitters.
The mission of Families in Transition is “To provide safe affordable housing and
comprehensive social services to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of
becoming homeless, enabling them to gain self-sufficiency and respect”. A large part of
helping them gain self-sufficiency occurs during the Employment and Training Program.
The program consists of three main phases. During Phase One, the participant, along with
their social worker and the employment specialist, develop a two-year plan outlining both
short and long term educational goals. In Phase Two the Employment and Training Program
provides an array of workshops, panel discussions and courses directed towards realizing each provide
training in crucial areas. Participants can work towards their GED, strengthen their computer skills, learn to
manage their time and money, and prepare their resume. Phase Three consists of internships and
employment placement.
Because of the hours donated by the Booster Club and a few other volunteers the Employment and Training
Program now has a large classroom to call their own. A big thanks to the following individuals for their help;
Katie Kemp, Paul Kemp, Jennifer Kemp, Karen Heaton and Bill Walch. Your time and efforts made a huge
difference to Families in Transition Employment and Training Program and to Outfitters.
Both Families in Transition and Outfitters are constantly looking for volunteers to help in a variety of ways. If
you would like to know more about volunteer opportunities feel free to contact me at 232-8126 or
shilliard@fitnh.org. If you have an area of expertise that you would be willing to share as a class during the
Employment and Training Program, please contact our Employment Training Specialist, Jim McCarthy at
jmccarthy@fitnh.org.
Thank you all for your continued support.
