The sea of black and gold was parted. On Thursday, January 12th, the Boston Bruins and their faithful followers must have been
really surprised by the number of fans wearing purple and black jerseys surrounding the opponent’s end of the ice for warm-
ups. The Los Angeles Kings were in town for their one and only Boston stop this season and the Manchester Monarchs and
Kings faithful weren’t going to miss it for the world.
With 11 players on the roster for the Kings that night who have worn the Monarchs sweater, it was sort of like a weird hockey
family reunion. For some it had to be strange being from New England and rooting for a team that was playing against their
beloved Bruins, others must have debated which team to cheer for (of course some of
us from New York didn’t have a problem).
It was fun watching warm-ups that night. The Kings end of the ice had fans lined up around the boards all the way around,
sometimes two and three people deep. Booster club bells were loud and proud. The Kings had fun with their fans as well, many
of them nodding to fans they recognized, and in some cases there were small waves or
bolder gestures (Michael Camalleri flashed a grin or two and yes, one lucky gal even got a wink). It seemed at one point that
some of the veteran Kings players found it amusing and were trying to see if they could get some of the attention too. They did of
course.
The Kings started off the scoring in the first on a goal at 18:55 from former Monarch Joe Corvo (his 9th of the season). Bruins
fans booed of course but you could hear cheers and bells in numbers as well. End of the first – 1-0 Kings. Former Monarch,
Michael Cammalleri gave the Monarchs and Kings fans a reason to use their bells again when he scored his 16th goal of the
season at the 12:02 mark in the second frame. Another period bit the dust – 2-0 Kings. Then came the onslaught. The Kings
continued their domination of the Bruins with four unanswered goals in the third period, including a hat trick from Alexander
Frolov that included a goal on a penalty shot. The only thing that kept Frolov from having a natural hat trick was a goal in the
middle by another former Monarch, Dustin Brown.
I don’t know about all of the Kings fans, but this one started to think that after ringing the bell for goal number five, ringing it for
any other goals would probably result in having a gold and black jersey mob as the last thing I’d ever see, so, sorry to the Kings
but I kept my butt planted and the bell silent for goal number six. Unbelievable! 6-0 Kings final score. Sadly, the Bruins fans
booed their own team. We applauded all three stars of the game. Sean Avery was the third star; Frolov with his hat trick was
only the number two star. Former Monarch, goalie Matthieu Garon was the number one star of the game, stopping all 30 of the
Bruins shots (the Kings had 42 shots on Bruins goalies Andrew Raycroft and Tim Thomas).
Wow that was fun. Can they do that again next year? We’ll all be back, with bells on!
